A car yard that only accepts cash is competing with one hand tied behind its back. In today's market, buyers are increasingly walking in — or browsing online — asking the same question: "What financing options do you have?" Yards that can't answer that question confidently are losing sales to competitors who can.
At the same time, buyers themselves benefit enormously when these options exist. Hire purchase, bank financing, and trade-ins aren't just conveniences — they're what make Kenya's car market work for more people, more often, on both sides of the deal. At Mombasa Car Market, we're working to bring all three directly onto our platform.
Relying only on cash transactions restricts the market to buyers who happen to have the full purchase price ready today — and it restricts yards to only that segment of demand.
Flexible payment options open the door to more of the market that's already out there looking to buy and sell.
Hire purchase (HP) lets a buyer take possession of a vehicle immediately while paying it off in structured installments over an agreed period, usually through a bank, SACCO, or asset-financing company. The buyer pays a deposit upfront, then clears the balance with interest — full ownership transfers once the final installment is paid.
For buyers:
For yards:
One thing worth keeping in mind: HP agreements carry interest, and the vehicle typically serves as collateral until fully repaid — so understanding the full terms matters for both sides before committing.
Bank financing (an auto loan) works differently: a bank pays the yard directly and in full, while the buyer repays the bank over an agreed term with interest. The buyer applies, undergoes a credit check, and once approved, the bank disburses funds — the yard's involvement ends there.
For buyers:
For yards:
Bank financing can take a little longer to process than a cash sale — loan applications, credit checks, and valuations all take time — but the payoff is a safer, more credible transaction for everyone involved.
A trade-in lets a buyer offset the cost of a new or newer vehicle by handing over their current car as part of the payment — alone or combined with cash, hire purchase, or bank financing. The yard evaluates the trade-in vehicle's condition and market value, then deducts that value from the price of the new one.
For buyers:
For yards:
Any single financing option helps close more sales. But a yard offering hire purchase, bank financing, and trade-ins together lets buyers combine options — for example, using a trade-in to reduce the deposit needed for a hire purchase agreement, or pairing a partial trade-in with a bank loan for the remaining balance.
The combined advantage:
We know that connecting the right buyer with the right seller is only half the job — how the payment actually gets structured is often what makes or breaks a deal. That's why we're working to integrate:
Our goal is to remove the friction between "I want this car" and "I can actually buy this car" — for buyers and yards alike.
The car yards that thrive in Kenya's market won't necessarily be the ones with the most inventory — they'll be the ones that make buying as easy as possible for the widest range of customers. Hire purchase, bank financing, and trade-ins each remove a different barrier between a buyer and a sale. Together, they turn a yard from a place people visit to browse into a place people choose because the buying process just works — and they give buyers real, flexible ways to own the vehicle they need, on terms that fit their situation.
